Hardware & Embedded Systems, Cyber-Physical Systems
The members of this group carries out use-inspired research using state-of-the-art tools and technologies to create intellectual property that can spur sustainable growth in next generation embedded systems. It also relies on its state-of-the-art knowledge base and research expertise to provide world-class training in Embedded Systems Engineering for future engineers who can contribute to product innovation and developer productivity.
Research areas include: design methodologies for intelligent synthesis, security, life-time reliability, embedded signal processing, embedded software, human computer interaction, architecture-aware algorithms, reconfigurable computing and vision enabled sensing.
Cyber & Info Security
Researchers in this group study collaborative security, security protocols, mobile security, collaborative intrusion detection networks, web application security, forensics and biometrics. Research is focused on integrating new knowledge and technology to provide law enforcement and security agencies with automatic devices and capabilities to improve prevention, detection and solution of crimes, and acts of terrorism.
Research areas includes: network security, software security, web security and forensics and biometrics.
Data Management & Analytics
The members of this group explore fundamental problems in managing data and information that are of significance in the 21st century. They focus on the areas of data management, data analytics, information retrieval and information privacy.
This group investigates natural and artificial systems to comprehend principles that render intelligent behaviour possible in complex changing environments. The core focus of this group is on devising intelligent machines capable of learning, understanding and reasoning about past actions, so as to provide creative solutions to real world complex problems.
Research areas includes: cognitive and neuro systems, decision support systems, evolutionary, memetic and statistical learning, fuzzy systems, intelligent multi-agents, intelligent system and devices, machine learning and nature-inspired systems.
Faculty members and students in this group works in three core areas, namely, multimedia analysis, intelligent user interfaces as well as network technologies. Researchers work towards ubiquitous computing where communications and media transcend devices, interfaces, mobility and activities.
Research areas include: computer vision and multimedia processing, broadband network protocols and services, mobile-pervasive computing and internet of things, cognitive radio and advanced collaborative user interfaces.
Computer Networks & Communication
This group focuses on computer network protocol design, application, and optimization. In general wired networks, the research topics include software defined networks, peer-to-peer networking, and data-center networking. For wireless networks, the research topics include heterogeneous networks, mobile cloud computing, machine type communications (MTC) for Internet of Things (IoT), and cognitive radio. The faculty members and students apply various optimizations and algorithms to solve novel, yet practical problems in computer networks and communications. The relevant applications are developed to demonstrate the practicability and feasibility of the design and optimization.
Visual & Interactive Computing
Members in this group conduct research in computer graphics, image processing, computer vision and human computer interaction. The group aims to develop visual and interactive techniques for commercial and experimental digital art, animation and games. Researchers engage with a wide range of professionals such as computer scientists and engineers, artists and animators, storywriters, and user-interface designers to create new algorithms, tools and systems to validate and advance the state-of-the-art digital art and animation productions, including interactive forms of animation such as web-based animation and games.
Parallel & Distributed Computing
This group focuses on providing scalable and efficient solutions to real world problems.
Research areas include: distributed systems/computing (collaborative technologies, p2p systems, sensor networks, theory and algorithms), high performance computing (grid and cloud computing, GPGPU, performance optimisation and tools), and large scale simulation (agent-based simulation, decision support systems, virtual environments).
Researchers in the group collaborates with clinical institutions and medical schools for education, research and development. The research includes development of techniques and tools for computational analysis and visualisation of biomedical data abd processes, leading to the understanding of biomedical phenomena and the discovery of novel therapeutic methods.
Research areas include: embedded systems for diagnostic instrumentation, advanced medical imaging and visualisation, physiological models and computer simulation, bioinformatics and computational biology, quantitative methods in medicine, healthcare information systems, security telemedicine and clinical data mining.
The School of Computer Engineering actively pursues research collaboration opportunities through joint research programs and consulting services with industry partners to ensure that industry-relevant research is performed in addition to academic pursuits. Our partners include, but not limited to, Microsoft Research Asia, Rolls-Royce Plc, IBM, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and SAP. We also liaise closely with agencies and research institutes such as Media Development Authority Singapore (MDA), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTECH) and so forth.
